Selling at Auction

The principal advantages of selling at auction are, firstly the unlimited competitive potential offered, secondly the ability to sell with complete anonymity and thirdly the knowledge that items are being sold to the highest public bidder.

The auctioneer charges a percentage of the price realized (known as commission on hammer price) Therefore it is in the auctioneer’s interest to obtain the highest possible price for any item.

Rogers Jones & Co have the facilities to sell a single item or the entire contents of a property as required.

Selling Procedure

To sell a small number of items you will need an entry form, which we can send to you. We have two types of regular auctions (General, Household and Collectables or Antique and Fine Art) so there are two types of entry forms. If you are not sure which auction your item(s) should be entered then we can give you phone advice.

When you receive the entry form read the conditions and charges, complete the form and return the top copy to us as soon as possible. Please indicate whether you require transportation of your items that can be organized on an hourly charge basis.

When we receive the form back we will book your goods into a sale. We will then contact you with plenty of notice to request delivery or arrangement of transportation. Please do not deliver items without completing an entry form and until asked to do so.

Full or Part House Clearance

If you have a property to clear we are experienced and professional in this matter. With you or your solicitors instructions we can clear everything from the property, bringing all goods into the saleroom for auction and disposing of all non-saleable goods.

When goods are brought into the saleroom the saleroom team will sort through all items to check for goods of potential value.

For details on how our house clearance service can help, please telephone us with as much notice as possible. Do not leave the arrangement of clearing the property until the last moment as our auctions and removers are typically very busy.

Non-Saleable Items

It is sometimes difficult to admit that goods that you have lived with for a number of years do no longer have a value. We can provide advice on these items over the phone but the following are examples of items that no longer have a market; Old spring beds, worn out three piece suites, old melamine and teak furniture, old technology electrical goods etc.

Upholstered items such as beds and three-piece suites must conform to the current Fire and Cigarette Ignitability Regulations. Full details on request.

Transportation

See above under “Selling Procedure”

Electrical Items

All electrical goods are Electrotested at the saleroom for safety at a small cost to the vendor. Any items found to be unsafe are withdrawn from the sale.

Advertising

Our auctions are advertised locally, nationally and internationally.

Our catalogues are submitted to the world’s largest international antique search service that alerts buyers of particular items in our auction resulting in enquiries from all over the world. (see "In the News")

Our catalogues appear on this site and details of items appear in trade press and newspapers.

Valuation of Goods for Sale

Rogers Jones & Co provides a free, no obligation valuation of goods that you are considering selling. This can be done at your own home (a “house call”) or by reserving an in-house valuation slot on Friday mornings at the saleroom (or at other times by prior arrangement)

Reserves

Any item may have a reserve price to prevent it from being undersold. We do not charge for items failing to sell.

Payment

Vendors receive statements and cheques for items successfully sold within ten days. You will also be notified (usually next day) of not sold items. This notification requires your immediate response.
