Final Welsh Sale seals record year for Welsh art
November's Welsh Sale auction, the final one of 2024 was a resounding success. The 'sell through' rate of 83% was excellent with 334 of the 401 lots finding new homes.
The sale concludes a record year for Welsh art with sales exceeding £1.4 million for the first time. The results show the strength of the Welsh art market and our continued growth in this sector. Our database of active buyers has grown enormously in the last few years due to a tangible increase in interest in Welsh art.
Sir Kyffin Williams leads the way
There are no surprises that works by Sir Kyffin Williams have led the way on prices again with just under £454,000 in total value having sold. But the sell through for Kyffins this year has been staggering; we have offered 112 works by the artist in our three Welsh Sales and only 3 pictures failed to sell (and one of those sold in a subsequent sale at a higher price than the original estimate)! The appetite for Wales best known artist is unprecedented, and we are selling them to collectors far and wide with many of them purchasing a Kyffin for the first time. The appetite for Kyffin was fully on show in our latest Welsh Sale when a smallish but trademark 'farmer on a mountain with sheepdogs' saw a protracted bidding battle to reach an exceptional £61,000 hammer price conclusion. This is just £1000 short of our own world record for the artist.
Below are but a few highlights I have picked out from a record year of selling Welsh art:
Sir Kyffin Williams - 'Hills above Nant Peris'
Sold at The Welsh Sale (November 16, 2024)
£30000
Sir Kyffin Williams - 'Road to the Mine, Blaenau Ffestiniog'
Sold at The Welsh Sale (July 27, 2024)
£36000
