Plas Teg: Q & A
There has been considerable interest in our clearance of Plas Teg. Below we aim to answer your questions.
When are the auctions?
Small items including many lots of ceramics will be offered in our regular auctions at our Colwyn Bay auction house.
The first few lots of ceramics from Plas Teg are available to view here (21st January auction, lots 196-210).
There will be further ceramics in the Colwyn Bay auction on 11th February and from this auction onwards the Plas Teg section will be contained at the start of each (Colwyn Bay located) sale.
There will be a special one-off large auction with only Plas Teg items later on. This hasn't been scheduled yet. Viewing for this one-off auction will be in a warehouse near Wrexham. Watch this space! This will be for the principal items of furniture etc.
How do I ensure I don't miss these auctions?
The best way is to register your details at the footer of the webpage. You will then receive email updates. You can also follow us on Facebook however it is possible that not all Plas Teg auctions will be mentioned there.
How do we view in person?
All our auctions can be viewed in person by calling our offices to schedule a viewing appointment. If Plas Teg items are not in our auction listing online then they are not available to view yet.
How do we bid?
Through our website by either leaving a commission bid (highest price you wish to go to) or bidding live during the sale through your phone or laptop. Please ensure you register for the auction in good time. Remember that when you bid you are entering a legal contract to buy the item(s) you manage to win! Bidding does not take place in person for these auctions. Phone bidding is available. Viewing by appointment is encouraged.
Why are items being sold?
We have been instructed to sell items to financially support the owner’s care via Power of Attorney. We do not normally disclose such information but it was important for us and the legal representatives to curtail incorrect (sometimes wild) rumours, misinformation and other assumptions with regards to the background to the auctions.
What is happening to the house?
We are not involved in the house itself. The house is a Grade I listed building, one of the most important historic private residences in Wales. It therefore benefits from Listed protection. We are not selling anything that is a fabric of Plas Teg. We are in the heritage industry too, and understand fully the importance of preserving Welsh treasures such as Plas Teg. The house is now under around the clock security.
Shouldn't the collection remain in the house?
Perhaps that would be a good thing but it is worth noting that the collection of antiques and art is not original to the property. The collection has been put together in relatively modern times (considering the age of the house).
The collection is a fascinating insight into the taste of the most recent owner of Plas Teg. However, the objects are eclectic to say the least! Items are from many periods and have all manner of influences. Some items are modern.
The items were brought together to furnish a large property in a flamboyant and lavish way, items are not necessarily ‘Jacobean house’ in their nature. They reflect the personality of the collector.
We do not know what will happen to the house but no doubt that the next owner(s) will wish to decorate with their taste.
Further, many items have suffered in their condition and will deteriorate more if Ieft at the house. It is therefore imperative to act quickly in their removal.
How can I support the owner?
Bid at the auction and help elevate prices in the sale. Win a Plas Teg memento! Our aim is always to raise as much as possible for our vendors and that is certainly the situation here.
